Special shaped bags can support seasonal or gift ranges. Each format has different tooling and minimum order implications.
The right choice depends on fill weight, product density and how the pack will be displayed. A flat bottom pouch stands upright and carries more printed area. A spout pouch with corner spout or STANDCAP suits sauces, purees and concentrates. Material and barrier selection
Barrier requirements drive material choice. PET/AL/PE gives high moisture and oxygen barrier for coffee, nuts and powdered drinks. PET/NY/PE offers good puncture resistance for frozen or vacuum applications. Kraft paper laminates provide a natural look but need an inner barrier layer for extended shelf life. Mono-material PE and PP recyclable structures are increasingly specified where collection streams exist.
Compostable options such as PLA/PBS and degradable films are available for brands targeting industrial composting or reduced persistence. These materials have different heat resistance, seal strength and shelf life than conventional laminates. Test them with your actual product before committing to a print run. A one-way degassing valve is common on coffee packs; zippers, tear notches, windows, carry handles and hang holes are added during pouch making.
Filling, sealing and line compatibility
A pouch that looks good on a sample wall can fail on a filling line. Share your fill method: manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic. Spout pouches need a fitment placement and sealing step. Rollstock must match your machine's forming collar and seal jaw width. Flat bottom pouches often need a different opening and settling process than stand up pouches.
Seal contamination is a common cause of leakers. Powders and oily snacks can sit in the seal area. A clean seal requires the right fill accuracy, dust extraction and seal pressure. If you plan to run trials, request film or pouch samples that match the proposed structure. That lets your line team check runnability before a full production order.
Cost drivers and order quantities
Unit price depends on structure, size, print method and order quantity. Digital printing starts from 100 pcs for pouches and 10 kg for film. Rotogravure starts from 10,000 pcs or 200 kg. Digital print runs typically ship in 10-15 working days after artwork approval. Rotogravure runs take 20-25 working days. These lead times assume print-ready artwork and approved samples.
Tooling, cylinder engraving and material waste add to the setup cost. Larger runs spread those costs over more units. If you are testing a new SKU, digital print keeps initial investment low. Once volumes grow, rotogravure can reduce unit cost. Ask for a quote that separates setup, material and print so you can compare scenarios.
Sustainability and common mistakes
Sustainability rules vary by market. Some countries require recyclable mono-material structures or minimum recycled content. Compostable packaging needs the right disposal infrastructure to deliver its benefit. Avoid claiming recyclability or compostability unless the full pack, including zipper and valve, meets the relevant standard.
